This is just magnificent! A nose that just blows you head off: pure black fruits, Doris plum, a citric edge, crushed rocks. The palate has great backbone and structure, vibrant acidity and fine definition with pure blackberry, smoke and cedar, hints of tar towards the grippy, surly finish with a dash of white pepper. Enormous length. Dare I say that this is better than the Vieilles Vignes? Certainly here, no question. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted November 2008. Jan 2009,, Drink: 2012-2030
A candidate for wine of the vintage is Grand Veneur's 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines. A dense plum/purple color is followed by an intoxicatingly heady perfume of ground pepper, spice box, garrigue, meat juices, and copious quantities of red and black fruits. In the mouth, it exhibits superb texture, silky tannins, and a long, full-bodied, powerful finish with no hard edges. Consume it over the next 10-15 years.

This estate, owned by the Jaume family, has been on fire over the last decade. The wines are made in a polished, civilized, modern style, but they do not lack Provencal or Chateauneuf du Pape typicity. In 2006, they added a third cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape, an old vine cuvee that was mostly all Grenache in 2006, but a different blend in 2007. The real bargain among the Chateauneuf du Papes is their traditional offering. Over the last 4-5 years, Grand Veneur has produced a bevy of terrific Cotes du Rhones, and the following two cuvees are indicative of what they are capable of achieving. Oct 2008,, Drink: 2008-2023
One of the more modern-styled wines in every vintage, the Jaume family’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Origines checks in as a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 30% Mourvèdre, which was completely destemmed and aged 50% in concrete tanks and 50% in smaller barrels. Sporting a youthful ruby color as well as classic notes of graphite, black currants, licorice and smoked meats, this terrific 2006 is medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and stays fresh and clean on the finish. While it’s drinking at full maturity today, it has at least another decade of longevity. Mar 2016,, Drink: 2016-2026
Heady, minerals, exciting and good value. Unctuous and exciting at the same time. Some tar and lots of dried fruit. May 2008,, Drink: 2012-2022
Ruby-red. Sexy bouquet of cherry-vanilla, blackberry, cola and smoked meat. Fleshy and sweet, with lush red and dark berry compote flavors, velvety texture and slow-building tannins. As inviting as this is right now, it also has the material to reward patience. Jan 2009,
