A gorgeous effort that is drinking beautifully, the 2003 Domaine de Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape (80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and the balance Syrah and Cinsault, aged all in concrete) delivers a kaleidoscope of southern Rhone aromas and flavors, with notions of kirsch, strawberry liqueur, roasted garrigue, licorice and dusty minerality all soaring from the glass. Superb from the first pour, it continued to gain richness and depth over the evening, showing a brilliant, full-bodied mouth feel, excellent freshness and purity and a classic, focused finish. There’s certainly a hedonistic slant here, with the sweet Grenache profile front and center, yet there is nothing over ripe, it is perfectly balanced, and it carries an overall elegant, pure profile that keeps you coming back to the glass. Simply a great example of mature Grenache, it will continue to thrill for another decade or more. eRobertParker.com.June, 2013
