Critic Notes

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet, mainly red berry fruit with a touch of blackberry developing in the glass, the oak neatly interwoven and a conspicuous floral aspect emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity, very focused and linear but with good precision on the almost Latricieres-like finish. This is a commendable if slightly unexciting Charmes-Chambertin, but it should repay bottle age. Tasted September 2016. Nov 2016, www.robertparker.com

Burgundy’s Oldest Clos Vineyard - Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru – A vertical tasting
A Vertical tasting of Louis Jadot's Chambertin Clos de Beze with Head Winemaker Frederic Barnier and The Wine Advocate's William Kelley. Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent negociant house in Burgundy. A company that has managed to straddle both the entry level and fine wine market, whilst retaining respect in both. At entry level, they offer tremendous consistency at a ...

Charles van Canneyt - Producer Portrait
Charles Van Canneyt is the young vigneron at the helm of Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. When Alain Hudelot-Noëllat stepped down from running the domaine in 2008 – a post he had been in for around three decades – he handed stewardship straight to his grandson Charles. Based in Vougeot, this domaine has seen vast improvements in quality in recent years, under the guidance of ...

Bordeaux Radicals: Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion

These wines are brilliantly made, unique in so many ways and represent the cutting-edge of vinification techniques in Bordeaux. The rise in quality at the Chateau, along with the estate's reputation ...

The 2007 Red Burgundies
A couple of times a year, a group of a dozen or so of very knowledgeable and very experienced tasters get together to open, taste and share some Burgundy.  Serious Burgundy.  It’s an opportunity to discuss a vintage or two with like-minded connoisseurs and, of course, to enjoy food, wine and generally wine-related discourse.  It is a group that I ...

Domaine Gérard Raphet - Producer Portrait
Gérard Raphet - the quiet man of Morey-Saint-Denis - lets his wines do the talking. With some exceptional terroir to play with and some very old vines, his wines exude "terroir". His impressive holdings (totally 12 hectares) include five cuvees coming from four of the best Cote de Nuits Grands Crus – Chambertin Clos de Beze, Charmes Chambertin, Clos de la ...
