Critic Notes

Light aromas of currant and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Little hollow. Not as good as I remember.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now.-James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2007

Score: 87-/100Wine Spectator

I have noticed in my tastings that the second wine of Lafite-Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, has improved over recent years. The 1995 is a 40% Merlot/60% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It exhibits more of the trademark characteristics of its bigger sibling. Elegant, with spicy new oak, lead pencil, and creamy black currant fruit, this is a medium-bodied, finesse-styled wine with excellent purity and overall equilibrium. It is much more accessible than the 1996, and should drink well between now and 2010. Feb 1998, www.robertparker.com

2014: THE F+R PICKS. SMITH-HAUT-LAFITTE
They know what they’re doing at Smith-Haut-Lafitte. This is one of the few properties in Bordeaux that really engages with the end customer, and one that is particularly aware of the commercial realities of what they are making. The Cathiards, owners since 1990, have a clear ambition - to be the best - and they are well on this road. ...

Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate describes it as the “quintessential wine of elegance”, ...

2011 Bordeaux: Great News for Lafite Lovers
When we last tasted at Lafite, we were disappointed with the 2011 vintage as the wine was awkward and surly: blackly fruited and ferociously structured; showing none of the charm for which this chateau is so famous. Two weeks on and Lafite has blossomed into a silky, sweet, polished princess. The wine has softened, showing a nice bit of baby ...
