The 2012 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru nearly never existed! Frederic calls upon two growers who each produce one barrel. The first could only offer half, while the other could offer nothing. Frederic believes it is impossible to make a good wine from half a barrel and so he told me that he cried for two hours, imploring for something - anything! In the end, the grower acquiesced and agreed to fill up the single barrel. It has a composed, quite tertiary bouquet with smoke and almost cereal-like tinctures infusing the citrus fruit. It unfolds seductively in the glass, becoming ever stonier. The palate is well-balanced with a beautiful mango and marmalade-tinged opening that just flows across the mouth. Real richness here, quite feisty, this has real personality. Wonderful. Dec 2013, www.robertparker.com
