The 2012 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru possesses a wonderful, complex bouquet with orange zest, apricot blossom, minerals and white peach that wafts enticingly from the glass, gathering momentum with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, effervescent entry. The mineral-core is more pronounced here than the premier crus, with a taut piercing finish that feels very persistency in the mouth. While compositionally similar this is even more aromatically complex and refined than the Pucelles. This is bigger and richer but not finer with excellent volume and intensity to the middle weight flavors that also conclude in a wonderfully well-balanced finish that delivers terrific persistence. It will be interesting to see if the Pucelles can catch the Bienvenues in 2012 because at this very early phase the two wines are neck and neck qualitatively speaking. Tasted: Jun 15, 2014.
