Rich plum colour. This takes its time to open, is pretty subtle at first, but then explodes in juicy fruit. Clear salinity where you can feel the slate scrape of the limestone terroir, alongside well expressed aromatics with touches of peony flowers. Elegant and succulent. Second vintage with Jean de Cournuaud as technical director. A yield of 46hl/ha. 65% new oak, with a mix of barrels and 20hl casks. 3.77pH. Harvest 18-21 September, with all the Merlots in 3.5 days instead of the usual 11 days (and in fact stretched over one month in 2018), with just 20 minutes from picking to vat. Thomas Duclos consultant.

2014: THE F+R PICKS. DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU
Along with Leoville Lascases, Ducru-Beaucaillou is arguably the best wine of St Julien, producing wines that can often match the first growths in terms of quality, and doing so with some panache. Bruno Borie has performed wonders here since 2003. The vineyard area has been roughly halved – only the best plots, those that surround the chateau, are used for ...
Class act: Saint-Emilion
Saint-Emilion’s classification is in crisis – embroiled in court cases and controversy. But why? And does it matter? Sophie Thorpe investigates Saint-Emilion has been hitting the headlines. And not in the way it would like to. In July, just after the region’s châteaux submitted applications for the 2022 classification, two of the region’s four Premier Cru Classé A estates – ...

Joseph Colin - The new Domaine on the Cote de Beaune Block
