Critic Notes

The 2011 Barolo Unoperuno is an excruciating labor of love. Uno per uno means "one for one" in Italian and that's how each grape is removed from its cluster. With such a labor-intensive regime, only five barriques of this wine are produced. This manual destemming means that the wine does not show any of the bitter astringency you can get with stem inclusion or even mechanical destemming. The tannins come from the seeds. The Arborina vineyard is the source of fruit and this is the second year that Barolo Unoperuno is produced. It shows a lighter garnet color and pure aromas of wild berry, dried blueberries and cassis. This ensemble is finely textured and elegant. The tannins are silky and lightweight. It takes ten days and ten people to execute the destemming process. Jun 2015, www.robertparker.com

The FINE+RARE 'Four Decades of Barolo' Dinner
Last week fourteen of FINE+RARE’s customers joined us for a very special dinner at Alyn Williams. The theme: Four Decades of Barolo. We’ve been making as much noise as possible about this region of late, and much of this noise has been focussed on the recently released, and quite brilliant, 2010 vintage.  We thought we’d open a few bottles with some ...

The FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010
Last week we held one of the most exciting tastings we can remember at our offices: the FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010. Just over 90 wines from Barolo's finest: from the established names to the young blood, all from what is a clearly excellent 2010 vintage. The growers included F+R favourites Brezza, Ceretto, Cogno, Grimaldi and Oberto; the established stars of ...

2011 Barolo: "Intrigante"
Barolo Vineyard Following a vintage like 2010 is not easy.  2010 Barolos are not only of great quality, they were released to a market primed to buy something new, a market disillusioned with Bordeaux, a market looking for quality, value and character.  What the wines of Piedmont offered, and continue to offer is simple: the opportunity to buy, own ...

Barolo 2015: The Growing Season
We are very grateful to Ferruccio Grimaldi for his in-depth 2015 Growing Season Report below, identifying the key events and elements that affected the 2015 vintage... The 2014 climatic trend has brought an important water reserve that has favoured the cycle of the vines throughout the 2015’s vegetative year, especially during the warmest weeks of the year. The total rainfall ...

Barolo 2015: Vintage Report
“This is a vintage of absolute excellence right away, with great prospects over time for aging” - Roberto Voerzio “2015 is a thrilling vintage of rich yet vibrant wines” - Giuseppe Vajra “In terms of vinosity and richness it is similar to 2009, while for the complexity and intensity of the aromas it is more similar to 2010” - Roberto ...
