Critic Notes

Luciano Sandrone and his daughter Barbara tell me that the 2014 harvest needs explaining. Many are quick to dismiss it given the difficulties of the growing season that saw abundant rain, hail and bombe d'acqua, or "water bombs," which are a dangerous phenomenon with intense rainfall in a very small radius. But hard work does pay off. The Sandrone family employed 38 people for farming, when the average harvest requires only 22 pairs of vineyard hands. Great care was required to keep the leaves and the clusters healthy. The 2014 Barolo le Vigne is bright and fruit-forward. It is perhaps more accessible in the near term compared to past editions. It delivers dark fruit nuances over a mid-weight and compact mouthfeel. Jun 2018, www.robertparker.com

2011 Barolo: "Intrigante"
Barolo Vineyard Following a vintage like 2010 is not easy.  2010 Barolos are not only of great quality, they were released to a market primed to buy something new, a market disillusioned with Bordeaux, a market looking for quality, value and character.  What the wines of Piedmont offered, and continue to offer is simple: the opportunity to buy, own ...

The Sub-Regions of Barolo and their very different flavour profiles
Why is it important? Understanding the sub regions of Barolo is really worth some investigation because generally speaking each of the communes have a distinct flavour profile clearly differentiating its terroir from its neighbours. Many consumers are unaware of the different profiles and can be quite surprised by the Barolo in their glass tasting very different to the one they ...

The FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010

Just over 90 wines from Barolo's finest: from the established names to the young blood, all from what is a clearly excellent 2010 vintage. The growers included F+R favourites Brezza, Ceretto, Cogno, Grimaldi and Oberto; the established stars of ...

The FINE+RARE 'Four Decades of Barolo' Dinner
Last week fourteen of FINE+RARE’s customers joined us for a very special dinner at Alyn Williams. The theme: Four Decades of Barolo. We’ve been making as much noise as possible about this region of late, and much of this noise has been focussed on the recently released, and quite brilliant, 2010 vintage.  We thought we’d open a few bottles with some ...
