Critic Notes

The 1989 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (3-liter) is still striking for its freshness. Some of that is a factor of the large format, but standard bottles have also developed very positively. Here we find a classic flavor profile of tobacco, herbs, spices, plums and licorice with the depth, muscle and concentration of the modern school. The 1989 is a touch more layered and aromatically intense than the 1990, with an additional measure of length and overall complexity. Tar, smoke and licorice linger on an eternal finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate # 187 Feb 2010

Barolo 2010: Brilliant Wines from the Most Exciting Wine Region in the World Today
Barolo is similar to Burgundy in more ways than one, and it’s no coincidence that if you ask a Burgundian what his or her favourite region outside Burgundy is then many will say Barolo. The first obvious parallel is the use of a single grape variety: Pinot for Burgundy, Nebbiolo for Barolo, and this parallel is amplified somewhat by the ...

The Sub-Regions of Barolo and their very different flavour profiles
Why is it important? Understanding the sub regions of Barolo is really worth some investigation because generally speaking each of the communes have a distinct flavour profile clearly differentiating its terroir from its neighbours. Many consumers are unaware of the different profiles and can be quite surprised by the Barolo in their glass tasting very different to the one they ...

2010 Brunello + 2011 Barolo Tasting in our Hong Kong Office
The Hong Kong summer. Ask anyone who’s spent any length of time here and the words you’re likely to hear will include hot; humid; hot; sweaty; hot; suffocating… not quite the words that imply the ideal climate for a wine tasting focused on the titanic Italian regions of Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino, are they? Maybe not… With vintages as ...

The FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010
Last week we held one of the most exciting tastings we can remember at our offices: the FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010. Just over 90 wines from Barolo's finest: from the established names to the young blood, all from what is a clearly excellent 2010 vintage. The growers included F+R favourites Brezza, Ceretto, Cogno, Grimaldi and Oberto; the established stars of ...

2011 Barolo: "Intrigante"
Barolo Vineyard Following a vintage like 2010 is not easy.  2010 Barolos are not only of great quality, they were released to a market primed to buy something new, a market disillusioned with Bordeaux, a market looking for quality, value and character.  What the wines of Piedmont offered, and continue to offer is simple: the opportunity to buy, own ...
