Critic Notes

The 2006 Barolo is a medium-bodied offering with attractive, perfumed fruit. Though somewhat slender, the wine offers excellent balance, albeit in a smaller-scaled style than is normally the case. The wine opens up nicely in the glass, yet it remains a touch compact. Over nearly a decade of visiting Altare on a regular basis I have tasted just about every wine made here, including many from lesser vintages. The surprises have always been on the upside, so it will be interesting to see what happens here. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Feb 2010, www.robertparker.com

The raspberry, fresh fruit and flowers on the nose excite me. The red is full and silky, with lots going on. Racy. Better after 2013. Jan 2011, www.jamessuckling.com

The FINE+RARE 'Four Decades of Barolo' Dinner
Last week fourteen of FINE+RARE’s customers joined us for a very special dinner at Alyn Williams. The theme: Four Decades of Barolo. We’ve been making as much noise as possible about this region of late, and much of this noise has been focussed on the recently released, and quite brilliant, 2010 vintage.  We thought we’d open a few bottles with some ...

The FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010
Last week we held one of the most exciting tastings we can remember at our offices: the FINE+RARE Barolo Anteprima 2010. Just over 90 wines from Barolo's finest: from the established names to the young blood, all from what is a clearly excellent 2010 vintage. The growers included F+R favourites Brezza, Ceretto, Cogno, Grimaldi and Oberto; the established stars of ...

2011 Barolo: "Intrigante"
Barolo Vineyard Following a vintage like 2010 is not easy.  2010 Barolos are not only of great quality, they were released to a market primed to buy something new, a market disillusioned with Bordeaux, a market looking for quality, value and character.  What the wines of Piedmont offered, and continue to offer is simple: the opportunity to buy, own ...

From vineyards and hazelnut trees, to little patches of woodland famed for their truffles... As we travel through the region, our guide Giacomo points out a spot good for white truffles, another more renowned for the black variety. And he should ...

Barolo 2016 -Early Vintage Insight
It was about this time last year we bumped into Giovanni Angeli, winemaker of one of Barolo’s top producers – Massolino. He was over in London to promote his latest 2015 releases. Despite the positivity surrounding the ‘15s, Giovanni just couldn’t contain his excitement about the vintage that was to follow. At this time, the wines were still ...
