Critic Notes

In true Nebbiolo fashion, the 2009 Barbaresco brings out all kinds of delicate nuances with licorice, tar, anisette and pressed rose. The wine shows elegance and nicely firming tannins that are smooth and fine. Pio Cesare has done a good job of taming down some of ripeness of the warm 2009 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. ||Pio Cesare is what I call a “lighthouse” winery. Steadfast and standing tall among the rest, it floods the landscape with inspiration and light for a slew of smaller, boutique wineries looking to find their way. Among the most historic brands in Alba, Pio Cesare has worked hard to promote Barolo and the territory of the Langhe across the globe. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in creating a unified Barolo identity. Wine Advocate.June, 2013

Aldo Vacca: A true Barbaresco Icon
Aldo Vacca has been at the helm of Produttori del Barbaresco, arguably Europe’s most respected co-op, for the last 27 years. In this time the co-op has consistently produced some of the finest expressions of Barbaresco yet remains remarkably well-priced despite its benchmark reputation. With historic family ties (his great grandfather being one of the original founders of the Produttori), ...

Produttori del Barbaresco - The Single Vineyard Riservas
It is a rare chance to taste all the single vineyards side by side and the best opportunity to really try and understand the nuances and terroirs of each of the separate sites. What is immediately clear is however variable in their tannin profiles, aromatics and fruit flavours, they are all incredibly consistent in quality. There isn’t a bad wine in the line-up, more than ...

Cecilia Monte: Boutique Barbaresco at its Best
After working for many years under the guidance of the legendary Barolo producer Luciano Sandrone, Cecilia Monte set up her own winery in the northern-most cru of Barbaresco - Neive - in 2000. We have been so impressed with the wines we have tasted from this estate we wanted to sit down with Cecilia to find out how she does it! Her single vineyard Serracapelli ...
