Critic Notes

Serious barrel sample with crushed stones, cement and dark berries. Full and tannic. Solid line of acidity, too. Look forward to seeing this evolve. Mar 2017, www.jamessuckling.com

The 2016 Balthus, 100% old-vine Merlot, is terrific in this vintage. Inky blue/purplish fruit, mocha, chocolate, licorice and lavender infuse this deep, voluptuous old-vine Merlot. Even with all of its overtness and intensity, the 2016 possesses plenty of structural underpinning and enough brightness to drink well for at least a number of years. Tasted two times. Apr 2017, www.vinous.com

Score: 89-92/100Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Balthus, another wine from Yves Vatelot, has an upfront, quite bold bouquet with cassis and blackberry fruit, the new oak quite prominent at the moment. The palate is tannic with firm tannin, grippy in the mouth with quite a dry and masculine finish. Stocky, maybe a little brawny at present, it should soften with one or two years in bottle. Blackish purple. Fruit taken to a tarry limit on the nose and then on the palate it seems rather weakened by its treatment. No great follow-through. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2019-2025
