2004 Balthus (Bordeaux Superieur)

This 100% Merlot big time sleeper of the vintage, made by the proprietor of Chateau de Reignac, Yves Vatelot, pushes the envelope of quality as far as it can go for such a humble pedigree. Yields were a remarkably low 15 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine enjoys malolactic in barrel as well as batonnage with the patented oxoline system (a system of racking where the barrels rest on small wheels and can be turned easily). A stunning effort, it displays a dense purple color in addition to sweet notes of graphite, blackberries, and cassis. Rich, full-bodied, deep, and supple-textured, it should be drunk over the next decade. Very impressive! Jun 2007, www.robertparker.com
