A more reserved but more complex nose of various dark berries, violet, earth and plum introduces velvety, round and delicious middle weight flavors. There is equally good depth and more mid-palate concentration where the sap coats the palate on the frank and persistent finish. This should drink well young but reward 5 to 8 years of cellaring. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2018+
The 2012 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru has a similar bouquet to the Saint Romain at first, with crushed strawberry and red cherry fruit, perhaps a little iodine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied and pierced by a fine line of acidity. This is nicely balanced with a pretty floral finish that should fill out by the time of bottling. ||When I visited Domaine Taupenot-Merme in November, some of the samples did not show well since they had been taken too quickly from tank, therefore I re-tasted them with Romain Taupenot in late January, with the exception of his negoce wines that did not have any problems.
