LOCATION, TERROIR, APPELLATION, PRODUCTION…
Chateau Ausone is perfectly situated atop of the hill at the highest point of Saint Emilion on the edge of the town. The vineyards are partly on the shallow soils of the limestone plateau and partly on the clay-limestone cotes. This is coupled with an east-south-easterly exposure and protection from cool northerly winds because it’s surrounded by a rock belt. The vines are composed of 45% Merlot and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chateau produces around 23,000 bottles of (Chateau Ausone) a year and has a second wine named “La Chapelle d’Ausone” which produces between 4,000 to 10,000 bottles per year. The Estate also produces some great value cuvees –notably La Clotte a small single vineyard on the outskirts of St Emilion.
PAST, HISTORY, IN THE CORRIDORS OF TIME…
The Estate’s name comes from the poet Decimus Magnus Ausonius (310 – 395AD), and it’s the oldest vineyard site in St-Emilion. The modern Chateau dates back to the 18th century; the first owner was Jean Cantenat. Chateau Ausone despite being one of the great names of Bordeaux, and arguably has the region’s best terroir, fell into decline through the late 20th centurey due to infighting between the owners of the Estate. It was only after Pascal Delbeck was appointed winemaker in 1976 that the wines started to improve. In the mid 1990’s the Vauthier family bought the shares of Dubois-Challon and Alain Vauthier became the managing director of the vineyard. Since this time the wines of Ausone have been on an upward trajectory in terms of quality.
Amongst this top four, due to its smaller production levels and exceptional quality, has become the most revered and expensive wine in the appellation.
