Critic Notes

While there are lots of spicy wood tones in this full, ripe wine, the fruit lends grounding balance. Black currant flavors and firm tannins give it good potential for the future. Apr 2017, Roger Voss, www.wineenthusiast.com

Round and supple and very ripe. Dry end but some lovely luscious fruit on the way there. Maybe not a long-distance runner but not made to a formula. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2019-2025

Beautiful bright ruby red colour with gorgeous fruit placement, charm and succulence. Touches of vanilla bean never stray into over-sweetness, just a smile of pleasure inviting you in. Owned by Francois Despagne, planted to 95% Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc. A great value wine. Apr 2017, www.decanter.com, Drink: 2023-2038

Attractive core of fruit to this young red with a medium to light body, soft yet light tannins and a medium finish. Needs a little more fruit on the center palate to be outstanding. Mar 2017, www.jamessuckling.com

Score: 87-88/100James Suckling

The 2016 Ampélia is an attractive, juicy Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux featuring succulent red cherry, plum, flowers and blood orange notes. The recent purchase of an adjacent old-vine Cabernet Franc parcel has given this wine an extra bit of aromatic lift that it did not have when it was more heavily Merlot-dominated. The oak needs a bit of time to come together, but the 2016 is promising. Apr 2017, www.vinous.com
