Critic Notes

Picked the first day of harvest, yet at his highest alcohol (13.6%) of the vintage Roulot’s 2006 Meursault Boucheres represents another sort of departure from the norm for his collection. Fat, creamy, honeyed, and with a slightly awkward milky note, it is finds contrast in the bitterness of toasted nuts and citrus zest, and certainly clings impressively, but lacks the brightness, refreshment, or refinement of the best wines here today. I won’t prognosticate for now as to its bottle potential. Dec 2008, www.robertparker.com

Louis Jadot 2018 - Exclusive Casks
Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent negociant house in Burgundy. A company that has managed to straddle both the entry level and fine wine market, whilst retaining respect in both. At the entry level, they offer tremendous consistency at a price point rarely found in Burgundy. At the top end, with their Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites, their ...

Nicolas Potel: A Liquid History Lesson
Last week we were blessed with a visit to our offices in London from Burgundian legend Nicolas Potel. Listening to Nicolas recant tales of drinking vintages back to 1865, you realise the wealth of experience he has - from growing up in the footsteps of his father at one of Burgundy’s great wine estates, Pousse d’Or, before branching out into ...

Domaine Henri Boillot - Producer Portrait
As Stephen Tanzer outlines in his recent report, Henri Boillot is the first out picking on the Montrachet slopes. The combination of small production and picking early comes from a desire to retain vibrancy and energy in the wines over and above riper styles of Chardonnay found elsewhere in the Cotes de Beaune. This mineral driven “understated” yet “explosive” style ...

Henri Boillot on Burgundy 2018
The Vintage Henri Boillot is widely seen as the top micro-negociant for the production of the Cote d’Or’s finest white wines, including Le Montrachet. He abhors heavy whites therefore expect the style of his white wines to be lean, precise and razor-sharp. His red wine profile however is notably different. Whilst he believes acidity and tension are vital for ...

A showcase of Faiveley wines at the Annual Domaine Faiveley Grand Cru lunch
On a sunny afternoon last week, my fellow Private Client Account Managers, Martin and Peter and I attended an insightful tasting of the wines of Domaine Faiveley. Hosted by winemaker Erwan Faiveley, this was more than a regular tasting with lunch. Held at the two Michelin starred ‘The Square’, chef Phillip Howard devised a menu that beautifully and sympathetically allowed ...
