Critic Notes

The perfect 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard is 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot aged 20 months in 100% new French oak. I think this is the third perfect score I’ve given to this wine, which is the essence of their vineyard, representing about 13% of the total production, or a mere 320 cases. The wine has a gorgeously opaque purple color and a beautiful nose of camphor, charcoal, blackberry and crme de cassis with licorice and truffle. It has unbelievable richness, great texture, tremendous finesse, precision and delineation. Very intense, full-bodied and super-pure, the length of the wine must be at least 50+ seconds. This is a gorgeous wine and one of the great superstars of this fabulous vintage. Drink it over the next 25-30 years.

This winery certainly burst onto the qualitative scene in Napa in a dramatic way, and in just over ten years of experience have done an absolutely amazing job with what was once the Beringer-owned State Lane Vineyard in Yountville. In 2012 they produced five cuvées of Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietal-based wines, and that will probably drop to four as they were entertaining the idea of dropping the Endre from the portfolio (and I didn’t taste that in either 2013 or 2014). They also make a rosé and a late-harvest Vino Del Sol, which is slightly fortified with grape brandy. They have also played around with the Hungarian indigenous varietal Tokaji Furmint, which in 2014 was blended with some Tokaji Muscat.

Once again, Lou Kapcsandy, his son Louis, and their winemaking consultant Denis Malbec, have exploited to great acclaim this wonderful terroir in Yountville, producing an array of world-class wines that merit serious attention from readers. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is a real stunner. Despite an overall impression of femininity and understatement, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is simply dazzling. Sweet, floral and open-knit, the 2012 is nevertheless holding quite a bit back in potential. When I visited Kapcsándy during the 2012 harvest the enthusiasm was very high. This wine shows why. The blend is 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. Oct 2015, www.vinous.com, Drink 2020-2032

A showcase of Faiveley wines at the Annual Domaine Faiveley Grand Cru lunch
On a sunny afternoon last week, my fellow Private Client Account Managers, Martin and Peter and I attended an insightful tasting of the wines of Domaine Faiveley. Hosted by winemaker Erwan Faiveley, this was more than a regular tasting with lunch. Held at the two Michelin starred ‘The Square’, chef Phillip Howard devised a menu that beautifully and sympathetically allowed ...
