Tuscany is one of the most beautiful enchanting places in Italy with its rolling hills of olive groves, wheat fields, sculptural cypress trees and of course some of Italy’s finest vineyards. Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico produce the world’s finest Sangiovese wines, whereas the coastal region of Bolgheri is producing Bordeaux-varietal Super Tuscans that offer a truly unique recipe of these noble varietals.
Our visit to Tuscany this summer confirmed that 2016 vintage in the region is without doubt on the same level and in some cases exceeding the already high standards of 2015. Francesco Ripaccioli of Canalicchio Di Sopra believes there hasn’t been a time in the modern era of Tuscany where they have had the back to back vintages at this top quality level. The best of the 2016s have incredibly fine, silky and fully integrated tannins. This structural architecture allied with vibrant acidity also gives the wines great ageing ability. While we await the release of the 2015 Brunellos due out early next year, now is the time to stock up on the top 2016 Gran Selezione’s of Chianti Classico, the 2016 Rosso Di Montalcino’s and 2016 Super Tuscans. The quality is outstanding and the top examples extremely limited.
Speaking directly with winemakers throughout the Tuscany region we have compiled our vintage review of the 2016 vintage, outlining the key factors they believe have shaped the vintage. We spoke to top growers such as Gianluigi Neri (Casanova di Neri), Francesco Ripaccioli (Canalicchio di Sopra), Federico Staderini (poggio di Sotto) and more on the vintage. 2016 TUSCANY VINATGE OVERVIEW
