Westland is an American single malt distillery founded by Matt Hofmann and Emerson Lamb in 2010. Their aim is to produce the most authentic Pacific Northwest single malt without age specificity.
The Seattle-based distillery focuses on flavour development opportunities within raw materials. Its trinity of Outpost Range releases – Garryanana, Colere and Solum – experiment with Garry oak, single-varietal barley and peat respectively.
Westland challenges every element of the whiskey-making process including kilning, ageing and cask finishing. It has been championing scientific development in the industry and partnered with institutions like Washington State University’s Bread Lab to produce a barley for its flavour rather than its yield. They have made long-term investments in the pursuit of flavour, fully funding a full-time PhD student to study raw materials for Colere, and pursuing local peat malting solutions rather than international ones for Solum. Each product in the Outpost Range series took between five to 10 years from conception to distillation.
Westland was acquired by Rémy Cointreau in November/December 2016 and fully came under the umbrella of the business in January 2017. The entire team, including Hofmann, remained involved in the business following the acquisition.
