Domaine Leroy + Maison Leroy

Burgundy

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

In the 1950s, Lalou Bize-Leroy began working for her father’s négociant business Maison Leroy, dedicating her time to studying the vineyards of Burgundy. During this period she developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of the region’s terroir. By 1971 she was the Presidente/Directrice of Maison Leroy, accompanying her father to meetings at Domaine de la Romanée Conti (DRC), an investment her father had made in the 1940s giving him fifty percent ownership of the winery. Three years later Madame Leroy was the co-manager of DRC, where she worked until 1992, raising the status of the domaine to its now astronomical level. However, for reasons that have garnered much speculation, Lalou left DRC and turned her attention solely to her own businesses: Domaine d’Auvenay, Domaine Leroy and the original Maison Leroy.

THE DOMAINE WINES

Domaine Leroy forms the top tier and for many the pinnacle of Burgundian wine. The domaine was purchased in two parcels, the first in 1988 when she bought Domaine Charles Noëllat (renaming it Domaine Leroy), further increasing its holdings the following year with the purchase and absorption of Domaine Philippe Remy. The domaine has been farmed organically from the outset.

The purchase of the domaine was facilitated by selling a proportion of shares of the Maison Leroy business to the Japanese luxury department store Takashimaya in 1988. Ever since, the Japanese market have had exclusive access to the domaine's Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge and Blanc.

Domaine Leroy’s impressive holdings include nine Grands Crus (Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Renardes, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, Clos de la Roche, Latricières-Chambertin and Chambertin); eight Premier Crus (Volnay Santenots du Milieu, Savigny-les-Beaune, Les Narbantons, Nuits-Saint-Georges aux Vignerondes and aux Boudots, Vosne-Romanée aux Brûlées and Les Beaux Monts, Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes and Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes) and eight single vineyard village wines in Vosne-Romanée, Pommard, Auxey-Duresses, Chambolle-Musigny and a multi-vineyard village wine from Gevrey-Chambertin.

THE MAISON WINES

The Maison Leroy Collection, a continuation of her father’s négociant business, is the “insider” buy and offers an affordable entry to the domaine, something not provided by the likes of DRC.

Maison Leroy is a central part of the Leroy portfolio providing a wealth of wines hand-selected by Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy herself. Her lifetime of experience as a winemaker producing wines from almost every appellation in the Côte d'Or makes her one of the most experienced vignerons and tasters in the region. Lalou selects the Maison wines by blind tasting hundreds of wines each year and selecting from the top wines presented. She does this with no ties or obligations to buy from growers, allowing her to select wines purely based on quality. It is well known that she pays a premium for the wines she chooses, to allow herself to cherry-pick the greatest expressions of each terroir.

She stakes her considerable reputation on her expert palate and market knowledge, selecting all the Maison’s out-turn entirely from what she has tasted. Following the initial selection process the wines are then aged at the domaine and selected for release when she believes the wines are ready. This is one of a few houses that can offer twenty, thirty or forty year-old wines that have lain unmoved in the cellar since bottling. Each February fans of the estate wait anxiously to hear which wines are destined to be released that year, often themed around anniversary bottlings dating from 10 to 50 years old.

DOMAINE D’AUVENAY

Domaine d’Auvenay is the third entity in the Leroy empire, named after Lalou Bize-Leroy’s home, an old hunting lodge outside Saint-Romain in the hills above Auxey-Duresses, which she shared with her husband Marcel until he passed away in 2004. This estate is incredibly important to Lalou, as it was her family's original domaine and therefore has the longest history of production associated with Leroy, predating both DRC and Domaine Leroy. Domaine d'Auvenay is equally important to fine wine connoisseurs and collectors, with quality, demand and pricing on a par with the wines from Domaine Leroy.

IN THE VINEYARD

IN THE VINEYARD

Alongside Domaine de la Romanée Conti and sister winery Domaine d’Auvenay, Leroy produces the most exclusive and highly sought after wines in Burgundy. Across the vintages and throughout the entire range, their tiny output and immense quality mean an almost perfect storm where supply can never meet demand. This means that inevitably initial allocations disappear into private cellars immediately upon release.

There is an obsessive attention to detail at Domaine Leroy as well as two elements beyond the biodynamic farming that are critically important: the pruning and the sorting. Leroy is single-minded about low yields, small berries and retaining the health of their old vines. Their vines are easily recognisable since they avoid trimming the canopy, wanting to create the highest vines possible rather than hedging the vines which Lalou believes stresses the vines too much and affects the pollination the following year. Lalou admits the process is incredibly high maintenance and requires an extensive full-time viticultural staff to manage. She has up to 60 staff working for her during the season across Leroy and d’Auvenay. Whilst her neighbours have warmed to her philosophy (initially many thought she was crazy), few have followed suit, not being able to justify the running costs of such methods. Out in the vineyard you can visibly see the miniscule yield size in a Leroy-managed plot compared to its next-door neighbours. Low cropping means up to 4-5 times less fruit is produced than neighbouring vines.

No grape is more susceptible to over cropping than Pinot Noir and the minuscule yields produced in a Leroy vineyard show the extremes that can be achieved with this temperamental grape. High concentration of small berries on a naturally low-tannin varietal enables highly concentrated fruit without any loss of finesse, perfume or silkiness. This is evident on tasting the Domaine Leroy wines where you can’t help but sense the concentration and persistence of flavour - a profile that is evident throughout the entire range. The difference between the cuvées is defined not one of quality of fruit but of the distinct terroir and resultant fruit profile of each village, the wines’ structural development on the palate and the particular tannin profile from one vineyard to the next.

Biodynamic viticulture is strictly adhered to within the 23 hectares of old vines but Madame Leroy has not employed a winemaker or oenologist since 1993. She firmly believes that this is not a requirement for a domaine which has perfect fruit.

IN THE WINERY

IN THE WINERY

The domaine manages two sorting tables with a staggering 40 people hand-sorting every batch. At Leroy the entire production is made from 100% whole bunch grapes but the thick top of every cluster is hand cut and removed and every bunch size made uniform, with large bunches cut in half to create an even settling in the tank. The sorting is considered of such high importance that the process is never rushed and carried out by the same group of workers who have worked at the property for many years. If needs be, they hold back grapes in cool storage overnight during the busiest period of harvesting to allow adequate sorting of each batch that comes into the winery.

With this level of attention to detail it’s not surprising to find such purity in the wines. Famously Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy doesn’t identify herself as a winemaker; the wine makes itself. The challenge for her is providing the highest quality grapes to the winery and this is where all the effort is concentrated at the domaine.
