Château Hosanna is a relatively young wine label in Pomerol, but one with some of the richest
heritage in the entire region. It couldn’t be better situated with Château Lafleur to the north, Vieux Château Certan to the south and flanked on either side by Pétrus and Château Lafleur-Pétrus.
Prior to the French Revolution, the plot was part of the de May property and shared its
origins with Vieux Château Certan and Château Certan de May. Post the French Revolution the wine was sold as Château Certan-Marzelle. From 1956 to 1999 it was renamed Château Certan-Giraud and retained its reputation as one of the top Premier Cru sites atop the Pomerol plateau.
In 1999 the property was bought by the Moueix family. Following the purchase, the Giraud
family asked for the name to be changed and this prompted Christian Moueix to split the property into the newly named Château Hosanna, marking the finest vineyards within the property, and then reclaim the original name of Château Certan-Marzelle for the remaining part of the estate. Following extensive replanting Château Certan-Marzelle ceased production in 2010. Since this time, Hosanna has been one of the most high performing and most celebrated wines to come out of Pomerol.
Jean Pierre Moueix was born in Corèzze in South West France and moved to Saint-Émilion with his parents in 1929 following the Great Depression. In his adult life he became aware of the potential of the Merlot wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, which at the time were not as widely distributed or as highly regarded as the established Châteaux of the Left Bank.
In 1937 he established his wine merchant business – Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in the town of Libourne, promoting and distributing the wines of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion around France and the rest of the world. In 1950 he made his first vineyard acquisition, purchasing Château La Fleur-Pétrus.
Jean-Pierre’s son Christian Moueix joined the company in 1970, predominantly managing the viticultural side of the business before becoming the president of the business in 1991. In 2009 Christian Moueix’s older brother Jean-Francois inherited Pétrus whilst Christian and his son Edouard continue to control and manage the remaining properties.
Éstablissements Jean Pierre Moueix has since become the largest wine merchant to operate on the Right Bank producing, distributing and promoting over 200 wines in its portfolio with their flagship Pomerol and Saint-Émilion Chateaux being at the forefront of their business. Together with Château Trotanoy, Château Hosanna is one of the flagship wines of the portfolio, with Hosanna described as the feminine counterpart to the more masculine Trotanoy.
