Domaine Georges Roumier is an ever-popular Burgundy estate with access to some exceptional Grand Cru parcels including Bonnes-Mares, Ruchottes-Chambertin and Corton-Charlemagne. Production far outstrips supply and secondary market prices for the much-loved wines can be astronomical.
Based in Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine was established by Georges Roumier in 1924. The domaine started to bottle their own wines in 1945.
Of Georges Roumier’s seven children, it was his son Jean-Marie who took over the estate in 1957. Jean-Marie’s son, Christophe, joined him in 1982, taking the reins fully 10 years later, in 1992. During Christophe’s tenure, the domaine rapidly gained recognition and earned a loyal following.
Today, the domaine farms 11.8 hectares in total, spread across nine separate appellations, from as far north as Ruchottes-Chambertin down to Corton-Charlemagne. The vineyards include five different Grands Crus: Bonnes-Mares, Musigny, Charmes-Chambertin Aux Mazoyères, Ruchottes-Chambertin and Corton-Charlemagne. The domaine produces three Chambolle-Musigny Premiers Crus: Les Amoureuses, Les Combottes and Les Cras, as well as a village Chambolle-Musigny. Roumier also has a monopole Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru called Clos de la Bussière, an old walled vineyard first created by the Cistercian monks. There is also a Bougogne Rouge.
Winemaking is kept simple. While it varies according to vintage, the fruit is mainly de-stemmed, with a portion of whole-bunch fermentation used in certain years. Following a cold soak, the wines are fermented and aged in barrel. Between 15 and 25% new oak is used for the village wine, 25-40% for the Premiers Crus and up to 50% for the Grands Crus. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.
