With a history dating back to the 1860s (they were the first producer to add the name “Soave” to their label in the early 1930s), family run Pieropan is widely regarded as the finest producer in Soave. It is no wonder when their vineyards are planted in the hills of the original Classico zone, the best wine production area in the appellation.Pieropan in Soave creates internationally celebrated wines which are every bit as complex as the great white wines of the world. Robert Parker believes that their two single vineyard wines, La Roccaand Calvarino, are “among the most exciting wines made in the region.” Made in limited quantities, these wines are highly sought-after and very different in style. Using 30-60 years old vines planted in Soave’s classic volcanic basalt soils, Calvarino (70% Garanega,30% Trebbiano) is unoaked with a steely minerality, similar to a Chablis 1er. Oak aged La Rocca (100% Garanega) is made from 10-50 year old vines planted on a limestone outcrop, unique in Soave, which produces rich, opulent wines reminiscent of a Condrieu. For the third year running, La Rocca has just been named Best Italian White at the International Wine Challenge, one of the Wine Industry’s most respected competitions. The judges have yet to taste the 2010, but we have high hopes for a repeat performance.Pieropan’s wines are a huge favourite of the team at FINE+RARE. Please take our word for it: the new releases are utterly delicious, superb value for money and should not be missed.
