For Antonio Galloni, Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne Blancs de Blancs represents“the single best value… in tête de cuvée Champagne”. It’s easy to see why - scores are always high and yet prices remain incredibly reasonable given the phenomenal consistency, pedigree and quality of this stand-out prestige Champagne.
Yesterday the full F+R team were fortunate enough to taste through a range of Taittinger's top cuvéesand the 2006 and 2007 vintages of the Comtes were real stand-outs. As a premium 100% Chardonnay champagne coming from 100% Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs, made from 100% first pressed juice the wine is the epitome of elegance, we were blown away by the quality.Following this tasting we are delighted to have both to offer direct from our cellars.
2006 - The 2006 has an incredible chalky mineral aroma and vibrant intensity and brightness on the palate. The textural finesse is extraordinary. Despite the energy and vibrancy on the palate the texture is like silk. Great citrus, grapefruit and sweet apple flavours and an incredibly long length.
2007 - The 2007 has a wonderful integration on the palate with the elegant silky texture beautifully integrated with the fine mousse. Succulent fruit of yellow apple and pear fruit. The integration and finesse give the wine a lovely weightlessness but there is still a quiet intensity on the palate and an incredibly long length.
The cuvée is only produced when the harvest is of exceptional quality and the 2006 & 2007s are both absolute superstars. The next release, vintage 2008 will be in 2020 and then no Comtes will be released from the 2009 or 2010 vintages.
TAITTINGER 2006 COMTES DE CHAMPAGNE
With 97+ points from Galloni and a price tag of just £420 per 6 in bond, Taittinger’s 2006 Comtes de Champagne perfectly exemplifies Galloni’s assertion regarding its incredible value. Even in the face of very strong competition from some of the best on the market, this is a genuine stand-out and perhaps the shrewdest buy of a very good Champagne vintage.
Galloni calls it “a hypothetical blend of 2002 and 2004” vintages - huge praise considering that he rates the 2002 as one of the greatest Champagnes ever made. Taittinger’s prestige cuvée, the Comtes de Champagne is one of the most elegant and stylish produced.
We’ve tasted it ourselves and absolutely loved it, but are happy to leave the last word to Galloni:
“I suggest buying a case… which is exactly what I intend to do”. Given how much wine he must taste and not buy, this seems like the strongest endorsement possible...
