Chianti Classico represents the heartland of Sangiovese production but the region remains fairly varied in quality. We have therefore curated our top picks of Gran Selezione and Riserva of the vintage.

Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Bellavista 2016

Sensational depth of aroma and flavours here, with black and red cherry, and cherry stone, smoked meat, sweet spice aromatics – liquorice, clove, black pepper, and crushed flowers. It feels dark and mysterious – a brooding wine, with exotic and herbal balsam notes, beautifully multi-layered and elegant silky and integrated tannins. (80% Sangiovese, 20% Malvasia Nera (which softens the palate and adds floral aromatics to the blend) (F+R)

Felsina Chianti Classico Rancia Riserva 2016

96pts – Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

“The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia knocks it out of the park. Like the other new releases from Fèlsina, this pure expression of Sangiovese needs more time to evolve and improve with bottle age. But even at this young stage, you are made fully aware of the beautiful intensity and complexity of the quality fruit at its core. There is so much energy and tension here, further reinforced by the fresh acidity of the vintage. There are vibrant tones of wild cherry, raspberry and spice, followed up by white truffle and tilled earth.”

Isole E Elena Chianti Classico 2016

“Isole E Elena makes one of the most elegant styles of Chianti Classco and the 2016 is true to form. Exuberant aromatics of ripe black cherry, violets, warm earth and a touch of light smoke. The tannins are fully ripe, genteel but not without some structure, allied with racy acids and a beautiful scented perfume that just sits above the red cherry fruit (bergamot tea, orange peel). Very well balanced and ready to drink.” (F+R)
