The top cuvee from one of our favourite producers, Tarlant’s Cuvee Louis is a phenomenal Champagne. Long-aged, late release and with a Krug-like complexity and depth, it’s a firm F+R favourite, very highly recommended. This is absolutely perfect with Christmas looming, or an equally brilliant addition to the cellar to age further.
The Cuvee Louis has a combination of raw materials and attention to detail that could embarrass even the most prestigious of producers. Sourced from a single vineyard and from some of Champagne’s oldest vines, it is barrel-fermented for body and held back for staggering amounts of time before release. The latest release is based around the 2000 vintage with reserve wines from 1999, ’98, ’97 and ’96 before being bottled in 2001 and disgorged in 2016.
The result of this combination is a tremendous Champagne. Deep, complex and utterly thrilling, it’s a bottle that has been an amazing 20 years in the making and for under £45 a bottle in bond offers almost unbelievable value for money. Cuvee Louis remains one of the great inside tips from any region and yet, for the moment at least, it remains under the radar despite serious praise from the critics:
“I rarely miss a chance to drink them” – Antonio Galloni on Tarlant
“opulent wine that is very high class” – Richard Juhlin
“reminiscent of a grand cru white Burgundy with bubbles” – Robert Parker
“remarkable… Krug style” – Hugh Johnson
