Described by Wine Advocate as “a classic among classics in a classic vintage”, the 2010 CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja is a wine for the ages from one of Spain's most renowned producers. It is also now available to buy almost exclusively through FINE+RARE...
Alongside 2004, 2010 is Wine Advocate’s highest rated Rioja vintage to date. Jancis Robinson has also described it as “good quality”, Decanter has called it “an excellent vintage” and Tim Atkin ranks it as a 5 star vintage.
Interestingly, although Tim Atkin was yet to rate the 2010 CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva at time of writing, he awarded the 2008 (a 3.5 star vintage for the region in his opinion) 97 points, it therefore bodes well for this legendary wine in such a strong vintage. This is backed up by the 2010 CVNE Gran Reserva being ranked number 22 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2016, suggesting that its big brother will also do well. Luis Gutierrez, the Wine Advocate's expert on Spanish wine, wrote of the 2010: "we're in for a treat with the 2010 Imperial Gran Reserva" and called it "a very good vintage for this bottling."
First produced in 1920, this is one of Rioja’s most traditional wines: hand-harvested 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, aged in French and American oak for 36 months and bottle for 48 months before it is deemed ready for release.
CVNE is a cornerstone of traditionally styled, premium Rioja and the 2010 Imperial Gran Reserva is true to superb form. This is a wine not to be missed.
