We’re delighted to announce the return of Escarpment, with the excellent 2015 vintage.
Escarpment are a producer fast developing a cult following in the marketplace. Expertly crafted in New Zealand's Martinborough, their Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs encapsulate the very best of New World winemaking, with a decidedly Old World elegance. The reds are followed hot on the heels by some premium whites, meaning . Our stocks of the 2014s sold out very quickly, so we are delighted to have received our allocation of the 2015s from Larry McKenna and his team.
While Otago is probably the most famous of New Zealand’s Pinot Noir growing regions, those in the know seek out the wines of Martinborough, which are characterised by their chic, Burgundian elegance. Escarpment are at the helm of Pinot production in the region, making wines which NZ Wine Expert Sam Kim previously commented, "could be mistaken for a top-flight Burgundy".
Escarpment's 2015 releases are still fresh out the cellar door, but reception has already been extremely positive. 2015 has been hailed as Martinborough’s third exceptional vintage in a row, and this is reflected in Escarpments’ scores. Raymond Chan awarded at least 19/20 points to each and every one of the four 2015 Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs. The scores are made all the more impressive by Escarpment's prices, which are still notably low.
The top scoring Kupe and Te Rehua lead the charge, with 19.5 points apiece: a staggering achievement given that they are available at just £150 and £128 per case of six in bond, respectively. Hot on their heels with 19 points are the Kiwa and Pahi Pinot Noirs, which at £128 per case of six in bond also offer really outstanding value for money.
For those looking to explore Escarpment’s 2015 offerings further, we also have their Beerenauslese-style Hinemoa Riesling and the barrel fermented Kupe Chardonnay. These have yet to be scored, but given previous scores - the 2014 Chardonnay received 18+ points from Raymond Chan - and judging by the quality of their red stablemates, the signs are certainly positive.
