With only 100 cases produced in 2014, the Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Folatieres’ from Mischief & Mayhem is emblematic of the tiny, artisanal nature of Burgundian winemaking. In the hands of this top-notch outfit, such minuscule amounts mean minute attention to detail and a simply sublime wine that will thrill even the most demanding white Burgundy connoisseur.
M&M’s Folatieres is sourced from a small plot of 50 year old vines close to ‘La Garenne’. What this means is a dazzling, mineral-driven style with lazer-like purity of fruit and fantastic elegance. Combine this with a vintage so strong for white Burgundy that Allen Meadows advises his readers not just to buy, but to buy “aggressively” and it becomes a very compelling proposition while still available to buy.
With just two barrels made the 1er Cru is achingly rare and even at this young stage. We have just this small parcel of 25 cases (a quarter of the total production) to offer and for those that love chic, elegant and beautifully made Puligny, it’s highly recommended.
