When our buyers visited the cellars of the iconic Burgundy producer Leroy for a rare back-vintage tasting. They are tasting some phenomenal wines as I write, but the one they’ve instantly chosen to recommend is the Bourgogne Blanc 2014. Considering that this producer is responsible for some of the most expensive wines on the planet, it’s a relative bargain.
Domaine Leroy occupies a near mythical place in Burgundy. Named by expert Clive Coates as “the greatest estate in Burgundy”, their stunning entry level wines are incredibly compelling and give a real insight into the style of this remarkable house, without breaking the bank.
Our buyers have been quick to highlight this 2014 Blanc as it more than lives up to the high expectations from a combination of what was a very successful white wine vintage and some of the best winemaking skill on the planet:
“Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy.” Robert Parker
“The sheer concentration, depth and intensity Lalou-Bize Leroy manages to squeeze into her bottless is breathtaking.” Clive Coates MW
“Domaine Leroy seems to produce an impossibly small amount of wine. Yet those wines have a habit of defining the ultimate quality that is feasible from any vineyard.” Bill Nanson
The reasons for the almost unparalleled excellence of Leroy’s wines are many; access to high quality parcels, tiny yields and absolutely meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that what is made is the very best that is possible of its type, with the Bourgogne no exception and showing superbly well.
Along with Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Leroy is without question the most prestigious name in Burgundy. DRC don’t make an entry level wine, but Leroy do and it provides a very, very good insight into this remarkable producer.
