FINE+RARE were visited by Raimund Prüm of S.A. Prüm. As well as being the cousin of J.J. Prüm, he is also the owner of the very best plot in Wehlener Sonnenuhr. And we are delighted offer a very special wine from this plot: S.A. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Herztrauben Spätlese at £120 per 6 in bond.
The Prüm’s history can be traced back 800 years. In the early 20th century ownership was divided between the Prüm’s children. J J and S A Prüm were the only two to continue making wine. J.J. focussed on export, while S.A. focussed on the German market, hence why S.A. Prüm is less well known outside Germany.
This wine comes from one of the oldest parts of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the Sun Dial vineyard, with an average vine age of 80 years. This steep vineyard is one of the finest in the Mosel Valley and produces some of the region's most iconic wines.
While picking the grapes for the Kabinett, four solitary grapes are left on each vine. For two weeks the vines concentrate the entire effort on ripening those lonely grapes, causing them to eventually reach an extraordinary level of concentration. They are then picked by hand, anything imperfect is discarded, and a miniscule quantity of this wine is made from what remains.
The care, attention and provenance that go into this wine make it a remarkable find at this price.
