"This is easily my wine of the vintage in 2017"
100 points – Jeb Dunnuck ( on the 2017 La Joie )
This week sees the release of the three Vérité wines – La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir – from 2017. Now into its 22nd vintage, the collaboration between Jackson Family Wines and the winemaking genius Pierre Seillan has become one of California’s most successful and celebrated projects.
Seillan’s micro-cru philosophy and no-expense-spared approach has set the benchmark for Sonoma. These are some of the finest Cabernet and Merlot blends made anywhere in the world. While the three styles of Vérité are based on the Left and Right Bank blends, these are anything but imitation Bordeaux. The variety of terroir in Sonoma, along with the steep slopes (some at a 35% gradient) and the effects of the Pacific Ocean make each of these Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot dominant blends unique.
The 2017s are as consistent as ever – detailed, elegant and profound.
"Not far behind, the Merlot-dominated 2017 La Muse offers a big, rich nose of chocolate-covered black cherries, espresso, damp earth, and leafy herbs that gains more bass notes and richness with time in the glass. It tastes like a great Pomerol from La Conseillante. Full-bodied, it has an incredible sense of elegance and purity, plenty of mid-palate stuffing, and a great, great finish. Made from 100% Merlot (this is the first time this cuvée has been all Merlot), it’s another incredible wine from this estate that has the flesh and texture to shine today yet the freshness, purity, and balance to evolve for 30 years or more."
