2019 CHATEAUX PAVIE MACQUIN + LARCIS DUCASSE

SAINT-EMILION

“Really classy red... It’s full-bodied, but so refined.”

98-99 POINTS - JAMES SUCKLING (on 2019 Chateau Pavie Macquin)

Today we see the release of two of the top wines managed by Nicolas Thienpont, whose portfolio of estates are some of the finest in Saint-Emilion, with each of the properties retaining such distinct personality and presence

Alongside Chateau Beausejour (due to be released next week) these two Premier Grand Cru Classe “B” Chateaux head up the portfolio which, in line with the overall consistency of the vintage, have produced stunning wines in 2019. From the terroir-driven, beautifully poised Chateau Larcis Ducasse - which Jane Anson declares “her tip for fastest-rising estate” - to the ever popular Chateau Pavie Macquin. Both properties have so much to offer and are thrilling expressions of Saint-Emilion in 2019.

Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stephane Derenoncourt have worked tirelessly to elevate this impressive set of estates and the consistency in quality from these top picks in 2019 is to be commended. The most difficult question is which one to pick!

The 2019 Pavie Macquin is succulent and racy, as it so often is. Red cherry, pomegranate, menthol, licorice and rose petal are all laced together in this super-expressive, sensual Saint-Émilion. A wine with soft curves and no hard edges, the 2019 is likely to give readers many years of drinking pleasure right out of the gate. The 2019 is pure sensuality in the glass.

"The 2019 Pavie Macquin feels very tight on the nose at first and certainly from my sample bottle, I allowed it 15-20 minutes to open. Eventually it reveals very intense scents of black cherries, cassis and crushed violet, touches of blood orange in the background. The palate has a satin-like texture, almost Vosne-Romanée-like, with extraordinarily pure blue and black fruit. Seamless! There is fine tension on the finish with impressive persistence. This is a seriously good Pavie-Macquin from Nicolas Thienpont and his team."

The 2019 Larcis Ducasse is a Saint-Émilion of energy and tension. Graphite, menthol, licorice, tobacco and cedar notes open up in the bouquet. On the palate, though, the 2019 is much more reticent. That is likely a very good thing for its long-term prospect. One of the features of Larcis is the use of 500-liter barrels (which are rarely seen in Bordeaux) for certain parcels. Those larger barrels certainly add to the wine's freshness and verve. Larcis is one of the more introverted 2019s I tasted. It is also one of Bordeaux's most under the radar gems.

"The 2019 Larcis Ducasse is deep purple in colour. The bouquet is opulent and ravishing with precocious dark cherry, cassis and crushed violet aromas that seem to envelop the senses, "hug them into submissions!" The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that manage to exert good grip, though you only notice that after the wine has exited. Great depth, touches of ash and black pepper infusing the black fruit with unerring balance on the finish. This is an outstanding Saint-Émilion with 30-40 years of pleasure to give."
