“Love the texture precision. Goes on and on. Best ever?”
96-97 POINTS - JAMES SUCKLING
This afternoon sees the release of Chateau Phelan Segur, one of the great-value estates from Saint-Estephe, which has produced an exceptional wine in 2019, with a 96-97 point score from James Suckling.
The wine is beautifully constructed in 2019. The angular tannins of Saint-Estephe are beautifully filed down, producing long sinewy structure that interweaves with beautifully plush, fresh fruit tones. There is both a level of elegance as well as opulence here in 2019 - the perfect recipe in top Bordeaux.
Described as “a definite star of the appellation” by Jane Anson of Decanter this is a fantastic value buy from a Chateau that is on the rise under its new owner, Philippe Van de Vyvere.
Sweet leather and violet aromas. The wine is subtle to begin with but builds beautifully on the palate. Dense, sinewy long tannins - ripe, fully resolved awash with a lovely freshness from both the tannins and acidity. Dense, opulent but with lovely restraint too. A lovely energy to the wine. Good sustain on the finish. Purity and clarity is retained on the palate. Great wine.

"Another impressive vintage at this estate, one that is regularly turning out wines to sit up and take notice of. A touch more austerity than was seen at this stage in the 2018, but the same level of intensity and concentration and just sheer confidence without trying too hard. Undertow of crushed granite and liquorice root, with real precision in the cassis fruits, and a wall of tannins that manage to be both present and unobtrusive. Great winemaking going on here. 56% new oak, 3.8pH, 1PT81. Could go higher when retasting in bottle. Tasted twice two weeks apart. Drinking Window 2026 - 2042"
