2019 CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD

PAUILLAC

“Considering its structure, complexity, ageing potential and how it has perfectly captured the soul of the vintage as well as the personality of Mouton, this is one of the most impressive wines to come out of 2019.”

Today sees the highly anticipated 2019 release from legendary First Growth, Chateau Mouton Rothschild. 2019 is undoubtedly an extraordinary wine, a balanced powerhouse with exceptional refinement to the tannins and an incredible energy on the finish.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild has not put a foot wrong in its production over the last five vintages - no doubt helped by the construction of their new vat house in 2012, which winemaker Philippe Dhalluin believes has led to greater detail and precision in the winemaking. The 2019 could arguably be the highlight of this string of amazing vintages from the estate.

Philippe describes how the Mouton Rothschild 2019 has many similarities with the 2010 vintage, displaying similar levels of tannin maturity, richness and balance, yet he believes the 2019 has more freshness too. This is key for him; he strives to capture the opulence so typical of Mouton, whilst retaining a freshness and energy in the wine. This is certainly the case with the 2019 which comes highly recommended by the F+R team, with the price reduction only making it more enticing.

"The blend this year is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 5th of October. Opaque purple-black colored, the 2019 Mouton Rothschild simply shines, even at this very nascent stage, beaming from the glass with bright, vibrant scents of crème de cassis, blueberry preserves, boysenberries and black raspberries plus fragrant suggestions of lilacs, dark chocolate, sandalwood, jasmine tea and woodsmoke with a spicy waft of star anise. The medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy, featuring tightly wound layers of black fruits, exotic spices and mineral notions, framed by exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with epic length and perfume. This year's profound expression is without doubt a legend in the making. (For number crunchers, the alcohol is 13.5% this year, slightly lower than 2018, which came in at 13.8%.)"
