One of the most exciting releases from the array of top Californian wines available via La Place this September has to be the latest 2017 vintage of Maya from Dalla Valle Vineyards based in the Oakville foothills of Napa.

Widely seen as Napa’s first cult wine, it was catapulted to stardom following the 1992 vintage becoming the second ever wine from the US to be awarded 100 points from Robert Parker and has retained that status ever since. The latest 2017 vintage is certainly another great vintage for the winery garnering massive scores across the board.

This estate has an extraordinary team of some of the world’s finest viticulturalists with Andy Erickson (previously at Screaming Eagle) heading up the winemaking, celebrated viticulturalist Steve Mathhiasson consulting in the vineyard with Michel Rolland working as additional consultant. All under the watchful eye of Maya Dalla Valle herself (whom the vineyard was originally named after), who before returning back to the family vineyard worked at Ornellaia, Petrus, Latour, Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte.

The estate was the first in Napa to plant vines above the valley floor and found that Cabernet Franc thrived in the region with the elevation of the vineyards retaining the freshness and acidity for this variety to excel, producing some of the most structured and long ageing wines in Napa Valley. The last handful of vintages have been particularly successful and the 2017 is a wine that captures both the Napa fruit purity as well as the more earthy, savoury depth and aromatic complexity of top Cabernet Franc blends. This comes highly recommended.

“The 2017 Maya is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Cabernet Franc and was bottled one week before I tasted it. Very deep purple-black in color, it opens with profound earthy notions of truffles, damp soil, crushed rocks and tar over a core of Black Forest cake, black raspberries, blueberry compote and aged meat plus touches of wilted roses and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is solidly structured with firm, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness lifting the multilayered blue and black fruits with a long, perfumed finish. Stunning. Drink Date 2021-2043.”
