After 30 years of fastidious consolidating of some of the finest Grand Cru sites in the Mosel and Saar regions of Germany, Markus Molitor shot into the consciousness of fine wine collectors when his 2013 vintage achieved an unprecedented three perfect 100-point scores from The Wine Advocate (who called it a “tour de force”).
Since then, the 100 pointers have kept rolling in. The wonderful 2017 vintage topped his record with five perfect scores in one vintage – but it is looking further down the list of wines he produces that is really breath-taking… in 2017 no less than 23 individual wines scored 98 points or above.
Although the acclaim is astounding, the sheer number of single wines that Markus Molitor produces can make it hard for collectors to know where to begin. To help work through this conundrum we have asked the winery to compile three exclusive collection cases that showcase the very best of his terroir – all in white capsule (dry), from the remarkable value Kabinett and Spätlese up to the sensational Three Star Auslese wines from his Grand Cru sites.
Having tasted all 24 wines in this offer, we can attest to the wonderful experience of exploring these individual vineyard personalities, with the overlay of the vintage variations – getting to know the 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages at this moment in time – whilst also seeing how the wines themselves evolve in bottle. A breath-taking and unforgettable tasting, and we are truly excited to share this experience with you through these collection cases.
Considering the number of wines, Markus’ dedication to the highest level of excellence is uncompromising. He explains,“We try to express each individual character of vineyard in combination with each quality level, style and vintage. Therefore we harvest all of the vineyards by hand only to have the possibility of selecting each single berry in its own category. This work and time intense process leads to approx. 80 to 90 different wines per vintage, but each one absolutely unique in its composition and taste.” This approach shows in every single one of these wines.
His vineyards stretch from the cool Saar region, where Ockfener Bockstein produces featherlight yet intensely flavoured, mineral and razor-sharp expressions of Riesling, to the Mittel Mosel, where the winery is based in Wehlen and the famous Wehlener and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst make complex, rich, mineral wines, and further along to Ürzig, Erden and Kinheim – again, all with their unique characteristics. You can read in more detail about all the different sites here.
To really get to know these wines, however, we of course recommend these wonderful collection cases, entirely exclusive to F+R.
