While 2019 is a low-yielding vintage in Burgundy, the grapes that survived the spring frosts and a difficult flowering period were blessed with a fantastic summer growing season. The resulting grapes were harvested in fantastic health, high in concentration and matched by fantastic acidity levels. Head Winemaker at Louis Jadot Frédéric Barnier was over the moon with the wines’ exceptional balance.
Jadot’s Meursault Premier Cru Les Gouttes d’Or shone at our 2019 tasting; a wine that has outrageous depth on the palate, packed with intense fruit flavours, opulent, rich and concentrated but with lovely balancing freshness.
Gouttes d’Or (literally “drops of gold”) consists of a gentle slope, located between 230 and 360 metres above sea-level at the most northern run of Meursault’s Premier Cru sites. The terroir has particularly shallow calcareous soils with white marl that is very stony, producing an aroma profile that is typically spicy, allied with white flower notes.
Despite the thin top soil Jadot describe the Gouttes d’Or as the creamiest and roundest of the Meursault Premiers Crus, stating: “It is really the perfect example of what people think Meursault should be.” East-facing, the vineyard enjoys a lot of sunshine bringing concentration to the wine.
There are only two barrels of the wine in 2019. Expressive, intense, opulent yet fresh, we loved it so much we bought it all.

“Les Gouttes d’Or is one of the cooler Premier Cru sites in Meursault and therefore excels in warmer vintages. It has a beautifully rich golden colour and a lovely expressive florality on the nose. It is pure opulence on the palate, full-bodied, exhibiting huge, spherical breadth which fills the palate. Honeyed melon, yellow plum and white peach fruit are in abundance, but the wine tightens up nicely on the finish. This is a wonderfully intense and serious Chardonnay. Drink 2022-2035.”
