“It’s floral and complex. So fresh and bright. Wonderful balance to this. Elegance and drinkability. Better than the 2018. One of best ever.”

Today sees the release of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe Chateau Laroque. This is one the best value En Primeur releases of recent years and easily our top selling wine by volume of any previous campaign.

James Suckling is currently the only established critic to have released a score for the wine so far, awarding it 94-95 points, is a great example of the exceptional value you can find during Bordeaux En Primeur.

The recent success of the wine is undoubtedly down to hiring the highly respected winemaker David Suire (one of the men behind two of Saint-Emilion’s top performing estates - Chateau Larcis Ducasse and Chateau Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse). His talent and experience, combined with the blessing of some stunning vintages, has seen this Saint-Emilion estate regularly score in the high nineties since his arrival.

Its incredible value lies in the fact that, for the moment, the Chateau remains relatively under-the-radar to many. Prior to 2015 it was never released En Primeur and up until the 2018 vintage it was released exclusively through one wine merchant. Thankfully the wine is now becoming more widely available and its reputation for consistency and value for money grows with every vintage.

The estate has an impressive lineage, with a history dating back to the 12th century. It is in fact the largest and probably grandest estate in the area, although its vineyards were largely abandoned between the 1930s-1950s. Following a replanting programme it was the first estate outside of the Saint-Emilion commune to be awarded Grand Cru Classe status in 1996. With huge investment in the vineyards and winery since 2015, and the addition of a stellar winemaking team led by David Suire, this is undoubtedly a very smart buy in 2019.

The nose is magnificent, with such a broad array of fruits and spice aromas that have such clarity and perfume, high quality oak tones and lifted perfumed spice all swirl from the glass. Fantastic colour, incredible fruit definition. It is opulent, rich and powerful, whilst the tannins remain succulent providing freshness on the palate. This is warming and full bodied heady St Emilion.

“This is very minerally and stony with crushed cement. Medium to full body and firm, polished tannins. It’s floral and complex. So fresh and bright. Wonderful balance to this. Elegance and drinkability. Better than the 2018. One of best ever."
