100-point 2017 Clos Apalta and 2017 Le Petit Clos

“Outrageous and so polished”

100 Points – James Suckling

Clos Apalta was founded in 1994 by the Bournet-Lapostolle family, who remain at the helm today. Working with some of the world’s oldest, ungrafted, dry-farmed vines, they produce exceptional Bordeaux-inspired blends based on Carménère – a grape that was once widely planted in Bordeaux, and has become Chile’s calling card.

The 2017 – the 20th vintage of this Chilean pioneer to be made – is a full, rich expression of Clos Apalta. James Suckling describes it as “stunning” with “fantastic length and composure”, making it in his view “the most classically structured wine ever” from the estate.

The property has also released the 2017 vintage of Le Petit Clos – the estate’s second wine, a Cabernet-led blend that offers a different interpretation of this extraordinary site.

“What a stunning nose of crushed berries, fresh flowers, sandalwood and light vineyard dust. Black olives, too. Very complex. Full-bodied with a beautiful, dense palate of blackberries, chocolate, walnuts and cigar box. Fantastic length and composure. The tannin just rolls over the palate. Very structured. The most classically structured wine ever from here. Goes on for minutes. Outrageous and so polished.”
