97 POINTS – JAMES SUCKLING
Nicolás Catena Zapata is a true pioneer. He pushed the limits of what is possible in Mendoza to craft world-class wines that put Argentina on the map. Working with pre-phylloxera clones of Malbec and Cabernet, he championed cooler, higher sites in the foothills of the Andes.
The latest vintage of the family’s flagship wine – the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée – has just been released. From ungrafted Cabernet and Malbec grown at over 1,000 metres’ altitude, it’s extraordinary.
The 2017 vintage is one of the best in recent years, combining wonderful freshness with a remarkable intensity of ripe, dark fruit.
Receiving its highest score to date from Vinous, it’s yet another release that confirms the family’s reputation as not just one of the best producers in Argentina, but the world.
