Casanova di Neri

Casanova di Neri pioneered the concept of single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino and today is one of the region’s most consistent producers.

Casanova di Neri

About the producer

The estate was established in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, in the northeast of Montalcino in the Canalicchio region. The property consists of 500 hectares, with 63 hectares dedicated to vines (the rest is woodland, olive groves and arable land). The second and third generation of the Neri family – Giacomo and his sons, Giovanni and Gianlorenzo – are now at the helm.

The 63 hectares are split between seven different vineyards, all situated around 300 to 450 metres’ altitude, with a wide range of terroirs. Their most famous single-vineyard cuvées are Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto.

Tenuta Nuova is a south-facing vineyard with very stony, rocky terrain that produces distinct rosemary and eucalyptus flavours in the wine, and a real persistence on the finish. The Cerretalto comes from graphite soil on a very steep hillside, benefitting from huge diurnal temperature shifts. The result is a wine with amazing breadth and incredibly plush tannins, while retaining a vibrant acidity.

For Casanova di Neri, the reputation of Sangiovese continues to be tainted due to poor handling of its tannins, producing unnecessary harshness on the palate which can be completely avoided if treated more carefully.

For Gianlorenzo Neri, ripe tannins provide a unique texture on the palate. Above all they want ripe, sweet tannins. To do this they de-stem all the fruit, with a first sweep of sorting by hand, then by an optical sorter, only letting the perfectly ripe berries reach the tank.
