Today sees the release of one of the top wines from the Saint-Estephe appellation – Chateau Calon Segur 2019.

For Laurent Duffau, director of the estate until January 2020 (succeeded by Vincent Millet), tension is key and his assemblage remains vital to this. He believes he cannot put more than 15-20% of Merlot in the Grand Vin in order to retain the precision of the mid-palate, the finesse, elegance and the subtle flavours that the Cabernet brings. This reduction in Merlot at Chateau Calon Segur has been central to the drastic improvement in the wines since 2014. Shortening the maceration time, careful selection of the press wines and the shorter elevage are all contributing elements to producing such precision whilst retaining concentration

For Laurent, the main characteristic of the 2019 vintage is the size of the Merlot and Cabernet berries, down 10-15% compared to 2018. Considering the small size of the grapes, he knew that the abundance of tannins would need to be treated with care. By carrying out limited pump-overs and cooler fermentation temperatures, they obtained extraordinary quality and quantity of tannins after just 72 hours of extraction. 

The final blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol content of 14.5%. It is thanks to the singularity of the Calon Segur terroir, and specifically its clay soils, that 2019 is both powerful and fresh, with silky, dense tannins and bright acidity. This is a wine with fantastic opulence and ageing ability

"This is a brilliant Calon Ségur, absolutely one to search out. Dripping with lush brambled fruit, from ripe damsons to sleek blackberries and touches of hedgerow that add an unforced juiciness through what is a powerful and concentrated wine. The tannins are chewy and very much present, and this has great ageing potential ahead of it. 3.8pH. A yield of 40hl/ha. 100% new oak. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Drinking Window 2029 - 2048"
