Livio Sassetti’s 100-point Brunello is undoubtedly one of the great success stories of the vintage. Speaking to Sabina Sassetti, she is ecstatic with how well the wine turned out. For her the 2016 was a “near-perfect vintage”. Key to Sassetti’s style, the 2016 captures freshness in the wine as well as concentration, whilst retaining approachable rounded tannins. Sabina believes this was achieved by constantly tasting the wine during maceration, taking care not to over extract. The result is a profound wine with an intricate layering of textures, whilst displaying an exceptional purity of fruit.
Coming off the back of an already sensational 2015 vintage, Sassetti believes the 2016 to be more classic and elegant in style. This is a wine that captures the essence of the vintage and shows how detailed and precise the finest Brunello di Montalcinos can be. “Blackberries, black walnuts and black cherries, as well as loads of chewy tannins. Some smoked wood, wood tannins and even black truffles. It’s full-bodied and powerful with loads going on. It just keeps growing on the palate. So much wet earth and black olive at the finish with porcini mushrooms, too. Needs time to soften. Crazy finish. Try after 2025.”
