2019 CHATEAU ANGELUS

SAINT-EMILION

“An extremely refined and sharpened Angelus with super fine tannins...”

98-99 POINTS - JAMES SUCKLING

Today sees a top release from Saint-Emilion, the Premier Grand Cru Classe “A” Chateau Angelus and looks to be a seriously attractive buy given the reception from critics and the quality of this year's wine.

Chateau Angelus believes 2019 is one of the finest wines made at the estate. It is a stunning wine, beautifully elegant, precise and detailed. The increased level of precision, fruit detail and finesse to the wine are elements that winemaking team Hubert de Bouard (now in his 35th vintage) and his daughter Stephanie have been working on at the property over the last few years. Of particular note, they have installed inverted / suspended vats that create more exposure to the skins without needing as much extraction. Hubert told us that whilst it is easy to extract tannins, extracting the best tannins is the challenge, insisting the new funnel shaped vats are key to bringing a heightened level of elegance and finesse to their wines.

Both Hubert and Stephanie feel that the 2019 Angelus “will go down as one of the top vintages made by the estate. It possesses the depth, balance, tension and energy to be a vintage of great complexity”. The assemblage is 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc. Part of the Cabernet is aged in 30hl foudre; Hubert states that oxygen can be the enemy to the Cabernet Franc grape and with the foudre it reduces the oxygen exposure by three times compared to barriques.

Tasting the wine there is no doubt this is one of the most refined and elegant Chateau Angelus ever made and a notable shift in the ratio between elegance over power, resulting in a strikingly fine wine with lovely tension, fresh purity of fruit, satiny tannins and mouth-watering freshness. It is exceptional.

Deep scented spice, tobacco, dark chocolate, offset by lifted floral perfumes - a beautifully precise nose. This is a gentle Angelus where subdued power sits at the centre of the palate as the rest of the palate bristles with expansive, soft, satiny tannins. Great detail and delineation of fruit, a mouthwatering juiceness and lovely mineral undercurrent. Great freshness, tension and beautifully elegant.

"An extremely refined and sharpened Angelus with super fine tannins and sweet ripe fruit in the center palate. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and so very polished. Silky. Very subtle. Bright blue fruit, black fruit and stones. Supple and minerally. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc."
