The Great Wines of Italy Tasting

Last Friday, James Suckling, in association with Hong Kong Tatler, hosted the Great Wines of Italy event in the Four Seasons Hotel. This is the third year that this successful event has been held. Over two hundred wines from seventy-seven producers, including Bibi Graetz, Castello Banfi, Ceretto, Fontodi, La Spinetta, Luce della Vita, Masi, Ornellaia, Poderi, Aldo Conterno, Roberto Voerzio, Siro Pacenti, Sassicaia, Tua Rita and Valdicava, were showcased.

The highlights of the day were as follows:

Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano Riserva 2004 A very complex and powerful wine. Aromas of berries, flowers and mushrooms, sweet and fine tannin with a very long finish. Still very young, this is one to put in the cellar for some years. My wine of the night.

Bibi Graetz Colore 2009 Full bodied with very fine tannins, dried Strawberry and floral notes with a touch of mineral in the background. A very balanced wine, made in tiny quantities from colorino and canaiolo grapes.

San Polino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2006 Bags of strawberries, backed with spices and coffee bean. Smooth and round tannin, acidity is very pleasant. A very nice wine.

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2010 Very young but showing nice potential, dried-berry and smoky aroma with very nice tannins and acidity.

Sassicaia 2004 Already drinking well, full body with a lot of sweet blackcurrants and chocolate. Tannins are smooth and balanced with good acidity.

Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche 2010 Very complex but still very young and closed. Tannins are sharp, but the fruit is very pleasant. Clear potential in the wine but needs at least 8 – 10 years to open up.

Luce della Vite Brunello di Montalcino 2009 Full body with very sweet and ripe fruits. It is ready to drink now, but I expect it will be better in 3 years.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche Dell’ Annunziata 2009 Berries, Cherries with a light touch of oak. Very smooth tannins with a round, long finish.
