New Releases Not To Be Missed This Month: April 2019

Champagne 2012

Spring is well and truly here and as the sunshine makes a reappearance we start to think of upcoming outdoor events and all the wines required to accompany them. Of course, Champagne is an ideal accompaniment and this month sees a host of releases from the 2012 vintage. As it begins to creep onto the market, 2012 is fast gaining traction as a vintage to stock up on. If you missed F+R Buyer Katie Reading’s report last week, following her recent visit to Champagne, read her latest vintage insight here. Top Champagne releases to look out for this month include:

  • Philipponnat 2012 Blanc de Blancs

  • Pol Roger 2012 Brut Vintage

  • Gosset 2012 Blanc de Blancs

  • Deutz Single Vineyard 2012s

Rosé 2018

When the sun is shining, Rosé remains a fail-safe choice for daytime gatherings. We sampled a huge range of new 2018 releases last week and have selected our top picks for the month. Whilst the 2018s are currently being bottled and will be ready for delivery in 4 weeks, if you need something immediately available we can't recommend the 2017 Grand Ferrage Sainte-Victoire from Mathilde Chapoutier highly enough; drinking beautifully now and with an incredible quality-to-price ratio given the pedigree of this top producer.  If you're looking to venture beyond Provence, see our selection of 2018 Rosé from further afield:

  • Mathilde Chapoutier Grand Ferrage Rose (Cotes de Provence) 2018

  • Castello di Ama Purple Rose (Tuscany) 2018

  • Chateau Puech-Haut Pic St Loup, La Closerie du Pic Rose (Languedoc) 2018

  • Chateau Lafage, Grande Cuvee Rose (Roussillon) 2018

Bordeaux 2018

For wines to lay down, later this month we will see the first 2018 En Primeur wines released from Bordeaux. It is virtually impossible to have missed the hype leading up to this vintage but on extensive tasting we can avow to the exceptional quality throughout the region and across the different varietals and appellations. There are also plenty of great value wines to stock up on too. The tiny Pomerol estate Chateau Belle-Brise will kick off the campaign in a few weeks time. Owner and winemaker Henri-Bruno de Coincy described 2018 as the best vintage he has ever produced. This vintage is a no-brainer and one to stock up on. Rhône Valley Highlights

Whilst the majority of the Bordeaux 2018 releases will hit the market in May and June, April remains a key month for Rhône releases. 2017 is another quality vintage from the Rhône but without the volume of the previous 2016 and 2015s vintages. For our early vintage insight click here or view our recent 2017 vintage update from Stéphane Usseglio here. This month will see some of our biggest releases with Raymond Usseglio’s stunning selection of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Xavier Vignon's 2016 additions to the Arcane series (he releases his exciting wines a year later than most). We will also be offering the 2017s from another F+R favourite, Chateauneuf producer Isabelle Ferrando from Chateau Saint-Prefert. These are wines not to be missed.
