2018 Bordeaux En Primeur Round Up #5

Following last week’s Bordeaux hiatus due to the VinExpo wine fair in Bordeaux, we expected a busy week to follow. The week saw a flurry of very well priced “value-buy” favourites come out and quickly sell out! This included Chateau Leoville Barton and highly anticipated Domaine de Chevalier. Chevalier has proved to be the ultimate value pick of the vintage so far, selling unprecedented numbers on release. The popularity of these releases proved there is a real thirst for the vintage when the pricing is right. 2018 is proving to be an EP campaign in which Chateaux have been sensible in their pricing and approach, the result has clearly caught the attention of the global fine wine market.

Without question the biggest releases waited until the latter half of the week with Chateau Rauzan Segla, Chateau Canon, Chateau Berliquet and Chateau Pontet Canet all releasing. Rauzan Segla and Canon were instantly sold out, making Chateau Berliquet seem a good alternative coming from the same stable and being surrounded by the vineyards of Canon. We still have a few more cases available, so worth securing. Chateau Pontet Canet is clearly a critics’ choice of 2018 and was sold out in hours.

At the end of the week a little gem was released in the form of Chateau Brane Cantenac, perhaps not quite sharing the limelight of its neighbour Chateau Rauzan Segla, but it should not be overlooked. It is a stunning wine in 2018.
